Invented in Italy in the 16th century, the concept of the Salon flourished in France throughout the 17th and 18th centuries and were well known as ‘Public Gathering’ houses. Held frequently in the bedroom of a lady reclining on her bed, close friends would sit around the lucky patron on chairs or stools. Rules of etiquette for the salon later followed with much more detailed social practices and codes.
